The Aarhus Convention at Ten: Interactions and Tensions between Conventional International Law and EU Environmental Law

Wednesday, 25 June 2008, 9:30 - 17:30

Follow-up Conference in ELNI

In Environmental Law Network International a report of the conference recently has been published.

Conference outline

On 25 June 2008, it will be exactly ten years ago that the UNECE Convention on Access to information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters was signed by representatives of 35 States and the European Community at a pan-European ministerial conference in the Danish city of Aarhus. To mark the 10th anniversary of the Aarhus Convention and reflect on its interaction with EU environmental law, the Centre for Environmental Law of the University of Amsterdam is organising an international conference in Amsterdam. The conference, entitled "The Aarhus Convention at Ten: Interactions and Tensions between Conventional International Law and EU Environmental Law", will focus in particular on the relationship between the provisions of the Convention and the development of EU environmental law. It will address synergies and conflicts across the three ‘pillars' of the Aarhus Convention and examine the broader legal and institutional implications of these interactions for the development of both EU law and international environmental law. The speakers will include leading experts and practitioners from several European universities, governments and European institutions, civil society organisations and the Convention's Secretariat and Compliance Committee. Participation will be open to all.
