Education

Private law in Europe has undergone rapid transformation over the last two decades. From being a branch of law that was hardly affected by European Community (EC) legislation, it has become the object of a multitude of harmonisation measures, to the point that the idea of a European civil code is now a priority on the political agenda. This development has given rise to a growing demand within the legal profession, within national and EC institutions and in academic research for lawyers with a thorough understanding of both existing European private law and the ongoing Europeanisation process and its dynamics.

The CSECL offers a Master's programme in European Private Law (as well as a summer school on European Contract Law). It gives students a thorough understanding of this developing multilevel system of private law in Europe. Relevant insights from other disciplines such as Economics and Political Science are integrated into the discussion of legal questions, thereby broadening and deepening the debate.

The Master’s programme in European Private Law is directed and co-ordinated and, for the most part, taught by members of our research group.
