Initiation and continuation: social context and behavioural aspects of ecstasy use
New publication (October 2009). Drug law enforcement does not have the deterrent effects on the use of ecstasy that are intended by international anti-drugs agreements or national legislation. In addition, prevention programs generally fail to reduce substance use. With regard to drug use, Dutch policy can be characterised as harm reduction oriented. The findings presented in this thesis support a harm reduction approach.

Antenne 2008
New publication (July 2009). In 2008, many in Amsterdam nightlife were harking back to the advent of house music (the precursor of dance) some 20 years ago. Geloof en Geluk
New publication (2008) Do young muslims stick to the tradition of their parents, or do they follow their own path? Again the Bonger Institute, instructed by FORUM, conducted a research targeting the trends in the lifeworld of young muslims, as a way of inquiring into their integration process in The Netherlands. After 'identity' (Van Allah tot Prada, 2006) and 'participation' (Van feesten tot vasten, 2007) this time it's religion that is the focal point of attention: to what extend can we speak of a new situation and individual experience.

Weeding out cannabis cultivation
New publication (October 2007). In recent years cannabis cultivation has been in the news regularly in the Netherlands. An important goal of this study was to estimate the number of dismantlings of these sites and the number of plants that were confisquated, for the years 2005 and 2006. To be able to make this estimate the methods of dismantling and registration were studied in detail, and police regions were asked to provide their registration figures. In addition, the developments in the areas of cultivation, cannabis growers and the cannabis market were studied. [Report in Dutch, with English summary]

Piling up and persevering
New publication (October 2007). In the Dutch media, young ethnic Moroccans are usually linked to delinquency and radicalisation. Young Moroccan males score high in crime statistics. At the same time, more and more Moroccan students are enrolling in colleges and universities. In this study we attempted to shed light on why some Moroccan youth are successful, while others are not.
A single ‘success formula’ was not found, but many Moroccan students talk about ‘piling up’ educations – going through consecutive educational levels – and persevering despite poor prospects and low expectations with teachers and others. [Report in Dutch]

Flevomonitor 2006
New publication (October 2007). In this annual monitor data are collected from facilities for addicts, homeless people or victims of domestic violence located in the province of Flevoland. An additional in-depth qualitative study focuses on homelessness and the apparent lack of overlap between the shelter population and clientele of other care facilities.
A total of 19 organizations provided records on 1 356 addicts, 1 016 homeless, and 1 818 victims of domestic violence. Only 152 individuals belonged to two of more of these groups, making the overlap a mere 4%. The in-depth study found multiple reasons why homelessness is rarely observed within other care facilities. [Report in Dutch]

Antenna 2006
New publication (September 2007). The growing popularity of urban music continued to be an influential trend at the heart of the club scene in 2006. In trend setting clubs the lines of separation between hip and mainstream, gay and straight, chic and vintage have softened. Antenna is an annual monitor which keeps close track of these developments and associated changes in drug and alcohol use in Amsterdam.
